Siding Warranties Explained – Protect Your Investment

Warranties are an important aspect of your home improvement projects. As a home or property owner, you want to make certain that your investment is protected. In our last two posts, we covered what you need to know about roofing warranties, and window warranties.

In our final post in this series, we will be talking about siding warranties.

Like the roofing warranties and window warranties mentioned in other posts, siding warranties have two basic parts:

  1. The Workmanship Warranty
  2. and the Manufacturer’s Warranty

Siding Workmanship Warranty

The workmanship warranty covers the installation of the entire siding system, regardless of materials used unless otherwise specified in the contract. This means that the company you hire to install the materials warrants that they will install the siding in a way that meets manufacturers’ specification’s as well as local standard practices. Many siding products also have their own workmanship warranty built in, as well as extended warranties that factory trained installers are able to offer!

When you hire a contractor to install new siding on your home, you are trusting them with your investment of time and money. It is important that you choose a local, qualified contractor who is trained and licensed to install your siding to manufacturer specifications, and one who backs their services with a Workmanship Warranty.

Siding Manufacturer Warranty

Every siding product has a material defect warranty of sorts.

By far the best warranties are included with Polymer (vinyl) siding products (Read more here)

What is a Double-Lifetime Warranty?

Siding products such as Certainteed and Royal Building products offer excellent products that include double-lifetime warranties. This means that your siding is covered under warranty against material defects for as long as you own your home, as well as the next owners of your home! This can be a big selling point if you choose to place your house on the market.

Quality polymer siding products can come with very comprehensive warranties. These warranties can protect against things such as:

  • 200+ MPH winds
  • hail damage
  • color fading
  • warping and shrinking

If you are looking for a great maintenance-free siding with a strong warranty that won’t break your budget, then New Polymer Siding (read more) is by far one of your best options.

Fiber Cement Siding Warranties

Fiber cement siding such as James Hardie comes with a 30 year limited warranty. These warranties include a transfer to one new owner when the house is sold. This is a warranty against defects, as well as hail and termite damage. But it is explicitly noted that the warranty does not include any labor or accessory costs.

If your James Hardie comes painted from the factory, it has a 15 year paint warranty against fading, peeling, and bubbling. There is no warranty if the siding was painted after installation.

Polymer Siding and Fiber Cement Siding are the most commonly used replacement siding types, although there are certainly more options available such as LP, wood siding, and steel siding.
