As soon as you step foot into Kansas City’s Union Station, your gaze is drawn up to the ceiling in a dizzying display of breathtaking architecture. Whether you’re looking to catch a train, spending an afternoon of exploration and learning at Science City, grabbing a latte at Parisi Coffee, or catching a 3D flick at the Extreme Screen movie theatre, you will never run out of family fun to be had. the Union Station is always dishing up new and exciting events and exhibits.

And although many of the activities will run a cost, the Union Station is also a perfect afternoon destination when you’re on a tight budget. Remember to bring along a couple of dollars to pay for parking, but then enjoy yourself at the captivating (and absolutely free) model train museum! And make sure you don’t miss the play area setup in the back with train tables and toys for your aspiring engineers!

You don’t have to leave the Kansas City metro area to show your child what a true family farm looks like, or how it operates. The Deanna Rose Childrens’ Farmstead was designed to depict a true family farm, and it welcomes in (for free!) anyone wanting to spend the day amongst friendly farm animals, and to gain a glimpse into farm operations!

Ride on antique tractors, cast a line in the fishing pond, enjoy a hay ride or some horseback riding, and see how a real Blacksmith shop works! Pack a picnic and enjoy an entire afternoon at this quaint and beautiful farmstead. Just remember that admission is free Monday – Thursday, and $2 Friday – Sundays, and on Holidays.
