2018 Kansas City Bucket List – 6 New Ways to Enjoy KC in the New Year!

Whether you were born and raised in Kansas City, or you are newer to the area, 2018 holds great adventure and discovery for those of us living in this great city! Kansas City is proud to be home to deep history and culture. However, while we enjoy the iconic places of KC like Union Station, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, the City Market, and the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, KC is also introducing new and exciting ways to enjoy the city.

We wanted to share some of our favorite new ways to enjoy Kansas City in 2018!

New Rides and Deals at Worlds of Fun

If you did not get the chance to visit Worlds of Fun in 2017, or to check out the new attractions, then this is definitely something to add to your 2018 KC bucket list! Worlds of Fun added two new thrill rides in 2017. Falcon’s Flight takes up to fifty riders at a time spinning and rising simultaneously to 100 feet in the air. The Mustang Runner has three arms with seven gondolas, which spin one way as the base of the ride spins the opposite direction.

Worlds of Fun isn’t stopping there. “We strive to provide new and exciting changes at Worlds of Fun every year, and look forward to having more families experience every aspect we have to offer at the park.” Says Tony Carovillano, the general manager over at Worlds of Fun.

Besides the two new thrill rides added in 2017, they are revealing a new family ride, Nordic Chaser, in 2018! It will be based in the park’s Scandanavian themed area, and guests of all ages will board small ships and ride the waves of the Nordic Waters!

Speaking of fun for the little ones at the park, Worlds of Fun is reintroducing the Pre-K pass. Those who preregister will receive complimentary admission to the park for children ages three to five.

New Local Foods To Sample and Savor

Oklahoma Joes, Jack Stacks BBQ, and the Bristol Seafood Grill—these are just some of the must-visit restaurants that we recommend to those visiting the city. But what about when we want to try something new? Thankfully, KC’s food scene is not slowing down! And there is always something new and delicious to try. Here are a couple of new places to enjoy in 2018!

The Pressed Penny Tavern

Open only since Thanksgiving in the heart of Westport, The Pressed Penny Tavern already boasts a 4.6 star rating on Google. Owners Gordon Roberts, former bar manager over at The District Pour House + Kitchen, and his wife are putting a creative and tasty spin on typical bar fare. The menu is exciting yet balanced. Try a little bit of everything by ordering a few small plates, or enjoy a salad, sandwich, or entrée, They also specialize in lighter vegetarian fare.

Kansas City’s Feast magazine says this about The Pressed Penny Tavern: “Mehl (Chef) shows the breadth of his culinary talent in everything from the fried Brussels sprouts drizzled lightly with honey to the fresh and bright Ahi tuna poké bowl. Richer small plates like the gnocchi with butternut squash and lamb meatballs are delicious and decadent, and spicy tofu togarashi is a unique vegetarian dish well beyond salad.”

Doughnut Lounge to open in Overland Park

While driving around North KC, you might have spotted the Doughnut Lounge food truck, and even stopped for a delicious morning treat. Or perhaps you’ve visited their location in Westport, where customers are leaving rave reviews such as:

“So Awesome! One of the best breakfast’s I’ve ever had. Donuts were really good- cool selection of funky flavors & ideas.”

“The Doughnut Lounge is amazing, and we’ve been many times, but yesterday they had an Oreo donut that blew away everything I’ve had there in the past.”

Along with sweet flavors like the oreo doughnut, you can also enjoy all kinds of savory breakfast options, including “noduts”: savory ingredients like eggs and sausage or Nashville hot chicken sandwiched between a doughnut. And with vegan and gluten free options, the Doughtnut Lounge has breakfast for everyone! They have definitely made their mark in Westtown and North KC, but now their fan-following is growing to the south as they open a new location in downtown Overland Park in early 2018!

New Exhibit Reveals in Kansas City for 2018

2018 is bringing with it some exciting new educational ways to enjoy the city!

Art of the Brick at Union Station

The Art of the Brick exhibit at Union Station is a must-visit attraction in the new year! It has wowed museum goers across Brazil, Australia, France, Russia, Taiwan, and Spain—and now it is coming right here to Kansas City! This exhibit is the “first-ever art exhibition focused exclusively on the use of LEGO bricks as an art medium is one of those rare experiences nearly impossible to describe, but so easy to love..” (

The Big Picture At Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

This April will bring the revealing of a remarkable exhibit three years in the making. It began in 2015, when the Hall Family Foundation made a $10 million grant to the museum to help it expand and broaden its photography collection. Over the past few years the museum has worked hard to collect pieces playing to the collection’s existing themes of daguerreotypes (a photographic process of iodine-sensitized silvered plate and mercury vapor.), and photos capturing life and culture in the 19th and 20th century European and contemporary international settings.

Beyond Planet Earth

Explore Jupiter’s icy moons and discover the future of space travel on a visit to the Museum At Prariefire in 2018! Budding astronauts will be amazed by this fun and educational exhibit that will teach them about what’s coming next in space travel. The American Museum of Natural History says that it is, “A new exhibition that offers a vision of the future of space travel as it boldly examines humanity’s next steps in our solar system and beyond.”

This coming year, why not enjoy the iconic places of our city, while making some stops to discover the new tastes, adventures, and thrills of Kansas city!
